If you’re leaving the airport for only a short time, odds are, you’re not going to want to rent a car. Instead, you’ll either take the train or the bus, since both offer service to PHL.
The great news is that the train is fast and reliable! But the station is a little far away from common tourist attractions like Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. However, with the help of a taxi, you can make it to those destinations without too much trouble – if you have the time.

What are Amtrak’s Red Caps?
No, they’re not something out of a Harry Potter book. They’re people that work at Amtrak’s busiest stations who are ready and willing to help you with all of your travel needs – including luggage storage!
Philadelphia’s 30th Street is an Amtrak red cap Union Station, which means that if you need help, all you have to do is flag down one of the people in red hats and shirts. The service is free! (Though they do welcome tips and we encourage tipping them if you can.)
What is there to see near the station?
There are quite a few things to see near the station. One of the top draws is the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Full of stunningly beautiful works by some of the finest artists in the world, this museum offers an amazing experience to everyone who walks through its doors!
And what’s more, they’ll even store your backpacks and large bags while you explore the museum! There’s no fee for this service, but we suggest only using it while you’re on museum property. Once you leave, it’s very likely that you’ll be required to take your bags with you.
Art lovers can also visit the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. They’re located about halfway between Union Station and Old City, so you may need to make travel arrangements that are faster than just walking if you want to get there quickly.
Good news: there’s a possibility that the Academy may also let you check your bags! We recommend calling ahead to find out for sure.
Storing your luggage at a museum is a great alternative to Philadelphia public lockers or mobile luggage storage, especially since there’s a definite shortage of both in the city.

They have lockers available for personal items and larger baggage. The standard rental time is four hours, with an option to extend if needed. The prices for locker rentals are:

The National Constitution Center may also allow you to check your luggage while visiting. We recommend calling ahead to see what their policies are.

If you’re going to be taking more than three rides on the SEPTA system we recommend that you buy a full day pass. It will save you time and money and you’ll be free to see as many sights as you want. Most of the attraction areas are walkable, so you won’t have to worry about transportation once you’re there.
