It may be a long layover, a late check-in, or an early check-out that’s the reason you’re in Philadelphia with a few free hours. And with so much to see and do in the city, you may as well explore!
But there’s just one problem: your luggage.
Before you whip out your phone to Google “luggage storage near me”, pause for a second to read the rest of this luggage storage guide. If you’re going to be using transportation that many tourists use (like Greyhound at Philadelphia Bus Terminal or Amtrak at 30th Street Station), we may be able to offer a solution to your bag storage woes!
Unfortunately, none of the airports in Philadelphia offer luggage storage. However, if you’re heading towards historical sites like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, there’s a great little place to store your luggage called Apple Hostel. It’s a short taxi ride away from the airport and is within walking distance of the aforementioned attractions. They offer free luggage storage if you stay with them - and will also store your luggage for a small fee if you aren’t.
But if you want to sightsee, you’re going to have to leave the airport anyway, right? And that’s where you’ll start to find convenient places to store your luggage.
Name: Apple Hostels
Address: 32 Bank St, Philadelphia, PA 19106
Type of storage: Hourly/Daily
If you’re leaving the airport for only a short time, odds are, you’re not going to want to rent a car. Instead, you’ll either take the train or the bus, since both offer service to PHL.
The great news is that the train is fast and reliable! But the station is a little far away from common tourist attractions like Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. However, with the help of a taxi, you can make it to those destinations without too much trouble - if you have the time.
And best of all, if you take advantage of Amtrak baggage storage, you can do it luggage-free!
Amtrak 30th Street Station’s luggage storage policy makes storing bags at Union Station easy and convenient for passengers. For $10 per item, ticket holders can store their bags at Amtrak’s secure facility for up to 24 hours!
Here are some answers to some commonly asked questions regarding Amtrak:
Does Amtrak weigh luggage?
Yep! They only take bags weighing up to 50 lbs, and they will weigh them to make sure they fall within this rule. We suggest packing as lightly as you can without sacrificing too much in comfort, if possible.
What are Amtrak’s Red Caps?
No, they’re not something out of a Harry Potter book. They’re people that work at Amtrak’s busiest stations who are ready and willing to help you with all of your travel needs - including luggage storage!
Philadelphia’s 30th Street is an Amtrak red cap Union Station, which means that if you need help, all you have to do is flag down one of the people in red hats and shirts. The service is free! (Though they do welcome tips and we encourage tipping them if you can.)
What is there to see near the station?
There are quite a few things to see near the station. One of the top draws is the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Full of stunningly beautiful works by some of the finest artists in the world, this museum offers an amazing experience to everyone who walks through its doors!
And what’s more, they’ll even store your backpacks and large bags while you explore the museum! There’s no fee for this service, but we suggest only using it while you’re on museum property. Once you leave, it’s very likely that you’ll be required to take your bags with you.
Art lovers can also visit the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. They’re located about halfway between Union Station and Old City, so you may need to make travel arrangements that are faster than just walking if you want to get there quickly.
Good news: there’s a possibility that the Academy may also let you check your bags! We recommend calling ahead to find out for sure.
Storing your luggage at a museum is a great alternative to Philadelphia public lockers or mobile luggage storage, especially since there’s a definite shortage of both in the city.
There is left luggage storage at Philadelphia Greyhound station! You can store your bags with Greyhound themselves, or you can head over to our partner, A&D Digital, to store your bags with Knock Knock City. (We charge $1 per bag per hour).
The Greyhound baggage storage fee is different at each location, and you can ask what they will charge at their help desk.
Old City is famous for its history - after all, it’s the place where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated and, finally, adopted. It’s a beautiful, nostalgic neighborhood full of quaint shops, great food, and opportunities for firsthand historical education.
But where to store your luggage?
If you’re just out and about and have no particular destination in mind, you can drop off your luggage at our partner location, City House Hostels. It’s only $1 per hour and it’s within walking distance of most of the major attractions in Old City! You can even book using our easy, free luggage storage app.
Or, if you’re visiting the Museum of the American Revolution, you can store your luggage there.
They have lockers available for personal items and larger baggage. The standard rental time is four hours, with an option to extend if needed. The prices for locker rentals are:
$3 for standard size baggage (1 bag)
$4 for large size baggage (2 bags)
$5 for jumbo size baggage (3 bags or more)
The National Constitution Center may also allow you to check your luggage while visiting. We recommend calling ahead to see what their policies are.
Philadelphia has some amazing parks full of entertainment opportunities for just about everyone. From\ families to singles, from animal lovers to ultimate frisbee fans, there’s something in Philly that you’ll love - even if it’s just a nice, quiet walk! Amtrak’s 30th Street Station is perfectly positioned close to Fairmount Park, a sprawling green area full of walking paths, playgrounds, and exhibitions. Their storage is $12 per day per bag if you have an Amtrak ticket. If no, it’s $20 per day, per bag.

Unfortunately, your luggage storage options in Philadelphia are rather limited. If you’re a rewards member of certain hotels such as Marriott, you may be able to have them hold your luggage for you while you’re out and about. Most of the museums in the area also offer the option to check your bag as long as you’re touring the museum itself, but you will have to take it with you when you leave. Luckily, we will soon be opening several locations for luggage storage in Philadelphia! They’ll be close to important landmarks like Lincoln Financial Field, Independence Hall, and others for the most convenient experience possible. Keep an eye out for our new locations coming soon!

Philadelphia holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans. In a small town hall over 200 years ago, the Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 revolutionaries, beginning a conflict that would result in the United States winning their freedom from the British. One of the great things about Philadelphia is its extremely efficient, well-run public transportation system run by SEPTA. If you’re going to be taking more than three rides on the SEPTA system we recommend that you buy a full day pass. It will save you time and money and you’ll be free to see as many sights as you want. Most of the attraction areas are walkable, so you won’t have to worry about transportation once you’re there.
As always, we strongly recommend keeping your personal items close and never leaving them unattended. If you plan to be out after dark, keep to well-lit areas and places you know are safe.
We’ve already mentioned Independence National Historical Park, home of the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Franklin Court, and more. Art lovers will be in awe of the beautiful exhibitions housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and science enthusiasts of all ages will jump at the chance to visit The Franklin Institute. If you’re a sports fan, catch an Eagles football game at Lincoln Financial Field. Finally, if you have lots of time and want to stretch your legs, check out Fairmount Park, one of the largest landscaped city parks in the world.
