Alternative Luggage Storage and Locker Options for New York City

Luggage Storage at NYC’s Penn Station

If you’re taking public transportation while in New York, there’s a good chance that you’ll end up at or near Penn Station. Luggage storage at Penn Station is difficult, but not impossible - and it’s certainly worth looking into if you want to sightsee in the area without your bags.

First, know that there are no Penn Station self service lockers! All of those were shut down after the events of 2001 due to security concerns.

But luckily, Penn Station offers luggage storage to its Amtrak ticket holders for a fee. You do have to have an Amtrak ticket in order to use this service.

If you aren’t an Amtrak ticket holder and don’t really want to buy one, there are other options for luggage storage near Penn Station. We’ve always had good experiences with Schwartz Luggage Storage NYC (now Schwartz Travel), which is just up the street from the station. Schwartz is also a really good option for all your Madison Square Garden luggage storage needs.

Just across the street from Schwartz is CBH Luggage Storage. They are two separate companies, and we recommend Schwartz because of their superior customer service. Before you use CBH, we recommend reading their reviews - sometimes they are really good, but sometimes they’re not. In fact, we suggest researching every luggage keeper in NYC before booking with them to be sure they are trustworthy and safe.

Note: Short Term Stow in NYC is permanently closed and are no longer available as a bag storage service.

And one final thing: though there’s still no Penn Station luggage storage for NJ Transit, they don’t restrict the amount or type of luggage you can bring (within reason.)

Luggage Storage At Grand Central in New York City

The other big transportation hub you may end up at (especially during the Holidays when it’s so beautifully decorated) is Grand Central Station. Just as at Penn Station, Grand Central has no baggage storage available to the public, so if you’re Googling “luggage storage NYC Grand Central” you’re going to be disappointed.

But luckily, there is luggage storage near Grand Central Station!

Earlier, we mentioned Schwartz Travel as a trustworthy place to store your bags. We stand by that they’re a good choice and that you would do well to give Schwartz Luggage Storage near Grand Central a try. They are also one of the few reputable companies that offer 24 hour luggage storage in NYC.

Luggage Storage Chelsea NYC

Chelsea is an upscale area of Manhattan that’s renowned for its eateries and upscale attractions. If you’re looking for luggage storage in this neighborhood, we recommend Luggage Keeper. Check out their website here!

Port Authority Luggage Storage

It probably won’t surprise you to learn that luggage storage at Port Authority itself is nonexistent. However, our luggage storage experts at Knock Knock City have solved that problem for you!

Check out our article on luggage storage at NYC’s Port Authority, where you can book online or use our convenient app to reserve your spot.

If you’re looking for luggage storage near Port Authority, you can also use Schwartz Travel or Luggage Keeper if you’re going to be passing through those areas.

Luggage Storage in Brooklyn, New York

There isn’t as nearly as much luggage-storage spots in Brooklyn as there are in Manhattan, but you do have a couple of options. One is Lugler, which is conveniently located close to Barclays Center. There is also a mobile luggage service called Free Your Arms that can pick up and drop off your luggage wherever is most convenient for you!

Does LaGuardia Airport offer Luggage Storage?

Because of security concerns, LaGuardia does not have luggage lockers available to the public. However, several hotels in the area offer luggage storage services for a small fee. We suggest calling around to see if one of them will hold your bags while you’re out adventuring.

What About Barclays Center?

From professional sports to concerts and more, there’s always something going on at Barclays Center! Whatever the reason you’re heading there, you’re probably wondering what the scoop is on Barclays Center luggage storage.

Here’s the answer: they do allow you to check bags at the Dean St. entrance only. Those lines can get very long, so you can also stash your bags over at Lugler if you want to get into the stadium faster.

Luggage Storage at New York City Airports

There are two major airports in New York City: LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International Airport. Unfortunately, LaGuardia doesn’t offer luggage storage at the airport. Price is calculated based on the size of your bags and will fall somewhere between $4-$16 per day. Your second option is at Terminal 1 (also near arrivals). Storing your bags there will also be between $4 and $16 per day, and this station is open from 7 AM-11PM.

If you’ve got a good map and don’t mind covering some distance on foot, walking is one of the best ways to experience New York City. Many attractions are close enough together that you can explore the majority in a single afternoon, which is why walking is such a good option. Despite their reputation, many New Yorkers are very friendly and would be happy to recommend places to eat and shop. However, make sure you stay in well-lit areas after dark and stick to places you know are safe. Again, anything’s possible in New York, so enjoy the good and safeguard yourself against the bad.
